Elderly Care in Chapel Hill NC
In our youth oriented culture, it’s often too easy to look down upon the elderly. Younger generations tend to see seniors as too old fashioned, even burdensome; especially those in need of elderly care.
However, there are some wonderful cultural acts that celebrate our senior citizens: From holidays that teach youths to respect those who came before them, to actual laws enacted to protect elders from neglect. Here are some great observances family caregivers can get behind to show even more appreciation for their loved ones.
National Grandparents Day
In the United States we established National Grandparents Day as the first Sunday after Labor Day. Many other countries have followed suit, celebrating the blessings grandparents bring into our lives. However, this holiday is only one of many elder centered celebrations through the year.
Grandmother’s Day
Grandmothers are often seen as the head of entire families in a lot of different cultures. Many countries have holidays especially designed to recognize the important roll grandmothers play in raising happy, healthy families. Some countries that give Grandma her well-deserved due include France, Germany, and Poland.
International Day of Older Persons
October 1st is International Day of Older Persons, a holiday used to recognize the elderly in every community. Established in 1990 by the United Nations, communities use this day to raise awareness of problems that face seniors and appreciate their contributions to society. Many rewards are given out as well, celebrating accomplishments and heroism attained by elders.
Chrysanthemum Festival
Some Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan celebrate the Chrysanthemum festival on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. (This is why it’s also called the Double Ninth Festival). Generally falling sometime in October, this is a holiday dedicated to remembering and respecting ancestors. In addition to visiting family cemeteries to clean and give thanks, many take this time to visit their elderly family members. In fact, China’s nicknamed the festival “Senior Citizen’s Day” to emphasize how important it is to care for elders.
Respect For The Aged Day
Every third Monday in September is designated “Respect for the Aged Day” in Japan. A national public holiday, news services across the country take the time to highlight elderly issues and run features on some of the oldest citizens. (Japan also has one of the highest populations of senior citizens!) Elders who reach the age of 100 also get a fine commemorative cup to display from the government.
Next time you’re looking for something special to do with a home care loved one, why not take inspiration from these celebrations? After all, everyone enjoys a good holiday!
